What are Oriental Beds

Oriental beds take their inspiration from the exotic Far East and can include styles such as Japanese platform beds, Chinese lacquered beds, daybeds, Indonesian teak beds and low style wooden beds. In general their style is simple and elegant to create a Zen-like bedroom space. Contemporary designs are usually low to the ground and feature elegant, clean lines with no fuss or frills. This is believed to create the most restful, calming sleeping environment in which to rest and rejuvenate.

Oriental beds are often made from exotic hardwoods such as teak, mahogany and mango. They can be stained dark brown, for a rich earthy colour scheme or left unstained for a natural, lighter look. Chinese lacquered beds are made from reclaimed pine or solid wood ash that is then lacquered seven times. Stressed edging completes the contemporary Chinese look.

The dark tones of oriental style beds look stunning when contrasted against a white or light wall colour and with white bed linens. Or for a more powerful bedroom environment, the deep darkwood tones work beautifully when combined with rich wall colours such as dark reds, aubergines, strong burnt oranges and mustard yellows.
