Abaca is a farm-based company from West Wales, which lives by its ‘organic’ ethos. Not satisfied with the amount of synthetic mattresses out there, Abaca took it upon themselves to create a collection of comfortable, organic mattresses. Each of the Abaca mattresses in our collection is individually crafted with organic cotton and lamb’s wool. The Welsh wool in the Abaca mattresses is naturally fire retardant, which means it passes all the required fire retardant tests, without chemical fireproofing. A simple natural latex mattress will provide plenty of support, without the synthetic chemicals of memory foam or other petroleum based mattresses. Natural latex is simply sap from the rubber tree, which has been frothed up and baked into a mattress. Much like synthetic memory foam, natural latex moulds to the contours of the body to create a comfortable sleeping environment. However, natural latex has heat and moisture regulation properties which are missing in synthetic memory foam. Our organic mattresses are hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant, and are guaranteed for 15 years; emphasising both Abaca’s and 4 Living’s belief that a mattress should be made to last.

Pocket sprung mattresses are the most common type of mattress, but not all pocket sprung mattresses are the same. Our organic pocket sprung mattresses provide a level of comfort and support not usually found in a conventional pocket sprung mattress. The Abaca mattresses are made using framed pocket springs, and are wrapped in layers of high quality Welsh wool. The mattress is a wonderfully comfortable, deep, and supportive. As well as being individually handmade to standard mattress sizes, the mattress is also available in bespoke sizes. The organic mattress collection also includes a mattress wrapped with needled horsehair and organic wool, creating a comfortable and relaxing firmness.

One of the most popular Abaca mattresses in the collection is neither pocket sprung nor natural latex - it’s both. The combination of natural latex and pocket springs creates a wonderfully balanced and relaxing mattress. The natural latex provides the weight distribution and heat regulation, while the pocket springs provide the resistance and underlying support. The mattress has been hand-tufted and is completely handmade from organic components, in Wales.

Abaca also makes a really comfortable range of mattress toppers or ‘mattress pads’. The pads are available in pure wool or natural latex and wool, as well as a double-depth option. If you have an existing mattress which you are fairly happy with but could do with improvement, or if you are looking to spend slightly less and love Abaca’s range, a mattress topper will be perfect for you. Another great use for a mattress topper is if you and your partner have different mattress preferences. A natural latex topper will add that extra firmness and support that could make all the difference.
